In 1945, the Americans and the Russians took over the scientists who had been working in Peenemünde and this part is for many the most revelatory. The men who had worked on the secret weapons of total war were now working for the conquest of space. And during the Cold War this took on powerful and potentially fatal consequences.

The films and exhibits take you through the Space Race, again with the rockets, the technology and some fabulous images from NASA and from Star City in Moscow. They show the race into space, Sputnik, the first space ship and personalities like Yuri Gagarin, the Soviet who was the first man in outer space and Alan Shepard, the first American in space. The films are packed with interest as the race and the conflict heated up to culminate in the Bay of Pigs.
