The 31st Festival Jazz & Musique Improvisée in Besançon is the place if you're a fan of new music. Each year top musicians are joined by international innovative artists producing some amazing combinations of sounds and concepts. Most of the music is at the Théâtre Musical and Cinéma Kursaal, but some concerts take place in historic buildings like Château de Joux near Pontarlier.

Expect to be challenged, and astonished, by artists like Jacques Coursil (trumpet and voice), Alan Silva (double bass) and Heribert Leuchter (saxophone) who play oratorios based on various contemporary poets, interweaving music, text, voice and rhythm. Or book for the Japanese musician, Yuko Oshima, who plays solo using drums and her voice. They’re alongside more established names like Benjamin Duboc on the double bass and Itaru Oki on trumpet and bugle.
