Although
Renoir died in the south of France at
Les Collettes, he is buried here in Essoyes. It's a real family burial site. Here are Aline, Pierre, Jean and Jean’s second wife Dido Freire, Claude and Claude’s son, his wife and their family. Also buried in the small village cemetery are Louis Morel, the sculptor who worked with Renoir, and Auguste Heriot, the founder of the Grands Magasins du Louvre, which opened in 1885 (the building now houses the Louvre des Antiquaires).
