Carcassonne hotels range from the upscale to the most basic. No matter what your budget, consult this list of the best Carcassonne hotels either in the fortified medieval city above or the modern city below.
1. Hôtel de la Cité in Carcassonne
Stay in luxury at Hôtel de la Cité, a four-star gem within the fortification walls. It is conveniently located right next to the Basilica Saint-Nazaire, and features finely-appointed rooms. Even if you can’t afford to stay here (the cheapest rooms are 250 euros in the off-season), treat yourself to a meal in one of the hotel’s less-expensive restaurants on an outdoor terrace, Le Jardin de l'Evêque.
2. Hôtel Donjon & Les Ramparts in Carcassonne
Hôtel Donjon & Les Ramparts provides a wonderful way to save money with sacrificing much in the way of quality. This is a very comfortable if modest hotel filled with ambiance. Although it is technically a Best Western, clearly this was previously a privately-owned hotel. The lobby seems like something right out of the Middle Ages. I also like the hotel’s second property, Les Ramparts (around the corner from the main building), with its massive and uber medieval stone spiral staircase to the rooms.
3. Hotel Aragon in Carcassonne
Aragon is just a one-minute walk uphill to La Cité. The hotel is full of character, but the décor is a bit retro (and not in the cool way). The staff is tremendously helpful. You will not find major hotel chain services here (the restaurant only serves breakfast), but you will get a charming room for a reasonable price. You'll also save a few euros by being situated outside the medieval village's walls, but you'll be situated right outside La Cité.
4. Hotel du Soleil in Carcassonne
If you're looking for a central location in the lower city, this hotel is literally a few steps from the train station (not to be underestimated in a city with sparse bus service to La Cite in the off season). The restaurant is comfortable, but serves up tasty fare. This is a nice choice to walk around Carcassonne's bustling lower city and the lovely Canal du Midi, or to drive or take public transportation to the medieval fortified city.
