Le Puy is a delightful, relatively undiscovered town in the Haute-Loire Department in the Massif Central but a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its religious connection with the pilgrimage routes to St James of Compostela in north west Spain.  It’s known as the town of monuments and pilgrims, lentils and lace.

Paris to Le Puy by train

There are several routes by train from Paris to Le-Puy-en-Velay. All of them involve changes.

  •  Via Lyon

TGV trains to Lyon leave from the Gare de Lyon in Paris (Place Louis Armand, Paris 12) all through the day.

TGV trains take from 1 hr 57 mins to arrive at Lyon Part Dieu. The connecting train from Lyon to Le-Puy-en-Velay takes around 2 hrs.

Total journey time with changes around 4 hrs 30 mins.

  • Via St. Etienne

TGV trains to Lyon leave from the Gare de Lyon in Paris (Place Louis Armand, Paris 12) all through the day.

TGV trains take from 2 hrs 54 mins to arrive at St. Etienne Chateaucreux. The connecting train from St Etienne to Le-Puy-en-Velay takes around 1 hr 30 mins.

Total journey time with changes around 5hrs 50 mins.

  • Via Clermont-Ferrand

Intercite trains to Clermont-Ferrand station leave from Paris Bercy Station, 48 bis Boulevard de Bercy, Paris 12, all through the day taking from 3 hours 28 mins.

At Clermont Ferrand station you have to change onto a TER express train to St. Georges d’Aurac, taking around 1 hr 15 mins.

At St. Georges d’Aurac you have to change again onto a local train taking around 50 minutes to Le Puy-en-Velay.

Total journey time 5 hr 54 mins. This is the most scenic route but you need time and patience.

Le Puy-en-Velay station is in the center of town at place Maréchal Leclerc.

Other connections include local trains to Arvant,  La chaise Dieu, Langeac, Marvejols and Retournac.

Booking Train Travel in France

London and Paris to Le Puy-en-Velay by air

There is no airport at Le Puy-en-Velay. You have to fly to Clermont Ferrand airport, or to Lyon airport and then either take the train from there (see above) or hire a car.

  • Via Clermont Ferrand

Clermont Ferrand Airport is at Aulnat, 7 kilometers (3.5 miles) east of the city center. There are connections to Paris Orly or Charles de Gaulle, Lyon, Nice, Corsica and other European cities, but only May to October flights from and to Southampton in the U.K. from Flybe.

The flight from Paris takes 1 hour (from Orly) and 1 hour 45 minutes from Roissy Charles de Gaulle.

The flight from Southampton takes 1 hour 40 minutes.

Local bus number 20 connects with Clermont Ferrand train station. A one-way ticket is around 1.50 euros.

  • Via Lyon

Air France runs regular flights from  Paris Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport

The flight is non stop and takes 1 hr 15 mins

Lyon Saint-Exupery airport and the Gare de Lyon Saint-Exupery TGV station are side by side, 24 km (15 miles) from Lyon. There are regular services to Lyon Part Dieu station  from the airport by the Rhone Express tram which leaves every 15 to 30 mins. Trains to Le-Puy-en-Velay leave from Lyon Part Dieu in the city and not the TGV station which is little used unless you are travelling on to eastern France.

To Le Puy-en-Velay by Car

  • From Paris

Le Puy-en-Velay is 543 kilometers (338 miles) from Paris and by car takes around 5 hrs 30 mins.

  • From the UK

If you are coming from the UK by car, take the ferry to Calais. From Calais to Le Puy-en-Velay, the distance is 828 kms (515 miles), taking around 7 hrs 50 mins non-stop, so it’s best to break the journey.

Getting from London to Paris

  • By train (Eurostar)
  • By bus/coach Eurolines offers a cheap service from London, Gillingham, Canterbury, Folkestone and Dover to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and Paris Gallieni. Six coaches a day; 2 overnight; journey time is 7 hours. The Eurolines stop is at the Paris Gallieni Coach Station, 28 ave du General de Gaulle, just by the Gallieni metro station near the Porte de Bagnolet (Metro line 3, final stop).Eurolines website
