Chateau in Bordeaux Destroyed in Error

By December 7, 2012

Follow me on:

Yvrac, just outside Bordeaux is a sleepy village where the delightful Chateau Bellevue has been razed to the ground - in error. The chateau had been bought by Russian Dmitry Stroskin who planned to renovate it. The story was that builders brought in, apparently from Poland, to knock down a small part of the building had in fact, taken the whole lot down. The village is in uproar and suspicious of the new owner who was in Poland at the time.

The authorities have launched an investigation into the destruction. The owner says he will rebuild but that it will take two years. The French are mighty suspicious of the whole affair and have used it to raise concerns about foreigners buying up prestigious properties in France.

The official Yvrac website has nothing on the destruction, but does advertise the Christmas market this weekend and the chance to buy tickets for the New Year's Eve Feast. But the mood in the village will certainly not be a celebratory one.
