The sun may be shining and we're still swimming in the sea, but canny skiers are already booking their holidays in the French Alps where the ski season is about to open.
On September 25th, the high Grande Motte glacier slopes at Tignes open, before anybody else manages to.
Tignes is a great resort. It's in Savoy in the Northern Alps, near Val d'Isère and has over 20 kilometers of slopes, 6 ski lifts and one of the best views; it should be, the glacier is over 2,000 meters high. A 7-minute ride on the Perce-Neige funicular takes you up to the glacier from 8.30am to 2.45pm.
