Basque Terrorist Group Announces Cease Fire

Wednesday March 22, 2006

The Basque terrorist group ETA (which stands for, translated from Basque, "Basque Fatherland and Liberty") has announced a permanent cease fire, according to ABC News. This marks the end of a decades-long movement that has wreaked havoc in the picturesque Basque country, which encompasses the Atlantic southwestern part of France and the bordering northern part of Spain along the Pyrenees Mountains. In recent times, an ETA terrorist arms factory was raided near Bordeaux.

This is wonderful news for travelers. This largely undiscovered part of Europe is among the most beautiful and fascinating destinations in the world. The threat of terrorist attacks, especially on the Spanish side, has served as a tourism deterrant, however.

The Basque Country features stunning timbered buildings, a unique culture and language, divine cuisine, year-round surfing and breathtaking shorelines. From the pretty Saint Jean de Luz to lively and bustling San Sebastian, Spain, this is a must-see region of Europe.
