Carnival of France, Travel and Francophiles #4

Monday March 20, 2006
Welcome to the fourth edition of the Carnival of France, Travel and Francophiles. The Carnival is a weekly round-up of news, blogs, travel reports, photos and other findings related to France.

Three years later - It's hard to believe, but three years ago the anti-France sentiment and downright France-bashing was at its peak as America went to war with Iraq. (Think back to Freedom Fries and the dumping of Burgundies and Beaujolais.) Monstersandcritics.com notes thatrepairing the trans-Atlantic rift between Europe and the U.S. continues to be a struggle to this day.

Speaking of war-mongering - Napoleon's return from Elba is celebrated each March in Golf-Juan, according to Provence Blog, featuring a historic reenactment.

Paris' designated driver - If you plan to do some partying in Paris and the Ile-de-France, you can catch a ride home for mere change with the Noctilien after-hours system, so shares the 40 Days in Paris blog.

Paris in the Springtime - What could be more inviting? Vivien, an American expat and operator of the Dispatches from France blog, talks about her experience as a local as the first signs of spring in Paris arrive. She and friends decide to experience Paris, including the Louvre Museum, like tourists instead of residents.

Paris to Corsica flight nixed - Thisfrenchlife.com's blog reports that discount airline easyJet's plans to run flights from Paris-Orly to Ajaccio, Corsica have been halted. This is due to an agreement that gives Air France a monopoly on the air route.

Taste of Provence- The San Francisco Chronicle reveals something that is no secret to fans of Provencal cuisine: there is major appeal to the fabulous Provence olive oils. The article also includes, as a bonus, a couple recipes like White Beans with Olive Oil & Parsley. Bon appetite, mes amis!

France in Pictures

This week, there are amazing and moving photos of France, including:

  • Egorheou Lake, a breathtaking picture featuring a sparkling lake nestled below two Alpine crests connecting France and Italy.
  • Metz Cathedral, an atmospheric picture showing sun beams piercing the cathedral's ceiling arches.
  • Bicycles in Strasbourg, a great photo that is a perfect example why the French are so thin and the French diet actually works.

I am looking for hosts for the Carnival of France. If you are interested in hosting, or simply would like to suggest your blog or article for next week's carnival, email me.
