The day's racing begins in Pau, a Tour de France regular of a city that is hosting its 59th stage. The day comes to a close in another popular Tour de France city, Revels, which is welcoming its seventh finish. This is a city of divine cuisine. It is in a fortunate location, close to the Black Mountain and near the lively city of Toulouse.

There was a crash in the closing climb. This elevated Alexandre Vinokourov from ninth to seventh place in the overall standings. The overall top 10 is:
