The race begins today! It commences in lovely Fromentine, a beach village best known for its delectable oysters. It also features the largest woods in the area. It is a prime destination for active travelers, with opportunities to hike, bike and ride horseback. The day's ride ends in Noirmoutier en l’ile, a small island town with more than 20 miles of sandy beachfront. This laid-back destination harkens to the peace and serenity of years past.

Lance Armstrong, who could win his seventh Tour de France victory, got off to a great start by finishing second place in the opening time trials today. It was also a good day for Americans, as they took three of the top four time trials. The best time went to Tour de France first-timer and American Dave Zabriskie, who will wear the prestigious yellow jersey tomorrow.
