Cannes Film Festival May 20 Report: Tommy Lee Jones is Da Man
Friday May 20, 2005
Tommy Lee Jones may seem like a veteran and grizzled Hollywood celebrity, but today he gets to revel in his role as a rookie. The screening of his film, "The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada," marks his debut both as a director and at the Cannes Film Festival. He's sure to be worth the wait. He also stars in the film as Pete Perkins, a Texas ranch foreman who kidnaps a man and forces him to exhume a body. Perkins and the abducted border patrollman head towards Mexico with the body. The movie also features performances by Barry Pepper and Dwight Yoakam. Here is an excerpt from the movie:
(Mike hears the noise of a pistol cocking.)
PETE: (with Mike in his sights)
Where are you going?
MIKE: (pointing at Melquiades' corpse)
He stinks, man, I can't sleep.
PETE: Get back over there where you was at.
(Mike sits back down. After a moment, he looks at the dead body and notices something strange.)
MIKE: Hey... Hey, you...
PETE: My name's Pete.
MIKE: Well, Pete, the ants are eating your friend.
